From the book, regarding my college radio shows: “None of them had required playlists, so I was able to go sonic spelunking with the audience in real time. Off air, I’d spend hours poking around the vast shelves of LPs and listening to them in studio B. I’d look at the names on spines I had only heard of--Coltrane, Williams, Cline, Nelson, Hopkins, Piazzolla, Holiday, and soak them in--and let their music guide me to the music of others…I was Burgess Meredith in that TwilightZone episode, piling up stacks of books to read before he broke his glasses.”
